On Friday, AL invited me and some friends to the Art Museum on our campus for one of their monthly events. This month’s event was called “Light Echoes” and AL described it to me as an event in which we would get to see the Tycho supernova that occurred in the Cassiopeia constellation in the 1500s. In the end, only AL and I went because our friends either had class or went home. Other than that day, I had never really set foot in the Museum on campus, I don’t really know why, I just never did. Unfortunately our high hopes for something spectacular weren’t as spectacular as we hoped, but it was still beautiful. The display was in this incredibly dark room (which made me a bit nervous, I’m scared of the dark), but once I saw the display and my eyes adjusted, albeit small, the display was breathtaking. It was a realistic representation created by Doug Welch and Dianne Bos, of the night sky on the night that Tycho observed the famous supernova. Doug Welch had to use many computer programs to determine the orientation, relative distance, brightness and other measures to make the display extremely realistic. Also, every so often, a fantastically brighter light would come on to represent the supernova. I commented to AL that it would be amazing to have such a display light up your bedroom ceiling at night, to which he agreed. After looking at the other pieces of art, AL showed me the sculpture in the stairwell, which was a giant vase constructed entirely out of clothing hangers! I thought it was really cool that people can actually have the innovation and imagination to come up with things like that.
After the museum, AL and I went to go check out the new Engineering building that just finished its construction. It was a really impressive building, although too much concrete for my tastes. I mainly liked the excessive use of windows (windows are love), and the fantastic café they have! I’m so jealous, I wish it wasn’t so far away from the rest of campus, otherwise I would definitely go there often!
